Curacao: The History, Culture and Lifestyle of the Island

Curacao is a home of over 140,000 residents stem from different parts of the globe and they speak in Dutch, English, Spanish and Papiamentu. They all are courteous and friendly and they are proud to be the resident of this island. Curacao is also the house of prehistoric Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue that was constructed in 1732. Today, this is actively used for worship. A lot of marks of the Dutch have been spotted that will last forever. It has ancient Dutch colonial buildings which dated back to 17th and 18th centuries. Curacao also has exceptionally stunning mansions of Peitermaai and Scharloo constructed in the 16th century. Willemstad is Caribbean’s major natural harbor and the historic downtown of these neighborhoods. This is why Willemstad has been recognized as World Heritage Site.

Museums
Curacao houses various unmatched museums. You can find endless exposure on slave trade in Kura Hulanda museum. In the Western Hemisphere, the oldest part of frequently operated synagogue is the Jewish Historic Cultural Museum. Other museums that worth your visit are Postal Museum, Maritime Museum, Tele Museum, Curacao Museum, and Landhuis Bloemhof and Landhuis Jan Kok art galleries.

Historical Forts
There is a wide range of prehistoric forts that are peaceful and stable like island and they envision their turbulent history. On either side of Santa Anna Bay, there are the Waterfort and the Riffort located in Willemstad.  In the old walls, you will find some excellent restaurants here. Some centuries-old forts are Fort Sint Michiel, Fort Waakzaamheid and Fort Beekenburg.

The Floating Bridge
Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge is connecting Punda and Otrobanda in Willemstad. Built in the year 1888 and renovated in the year 1939, this is said to be the oldest pontoon bridge that is about 550 feet long. When it opens for allowing the ships to enter and go out from Willemstad, people can use ferries to go around the bay. Only for pedestrians, it is restricted. But it is an excellent spot to capture the magnificent images of historic downtown.

The Floating Market
When sun rises, this market opens and it is located just opposite to the bay and the pontoon bridge around the corner at Waaigat waterfront. Fresh products and fish are available here in the vivid wooden boats of Columbian and Venezuelan merchants. This is century-old tradition of business here. This is the reason why it is known as floating market in Curacao.
